This project called for a radical reimagining of the apartment tower, bringing the familiar experience of a backyard garden into an unfamiliar context; a high rise residential building. To achieve this, a highly rational helicoid configuration of successive stacked apartments establishes triple height volumes above the gardens to maximise light penetration to the living areas and creates sufficient space for the planting of trees. In a volatile seismic region, a system of deep shear walls stabilises the hybrid concrete and steel structure. A project by Kristjan Donaldson in collaboration with Meir Lobaton.
